The highest international accolade for modern handmade carpets will be awarded at DOMOTEX for the eleventh time. Since 2015 the competition has been held as part of Innovations@DOMOTEX.
Judging for the Carpet Design Awards was particularly difficult this year as there were so many high-quality entrants. A trend seems to be emerging for more texture to be knotted and woven into the carpets such that they make a more physical than visual statement. The trend is more towards overall texture rather than artistic design as in the past.

Area carpet executives thank Deal

Posted: Thursday, December 31, 2015

As business leaders in northwest Georgia we compete (often with one another) in the vigorous and challenging market on a daily basis. We know the demands of customers, the interests of associates and the performance of suppliers can leave little time to engage in serious evaluation of organizational successes and failures. We expect a similar reality exists in the political world. Too often, the urgent, the negative and the naysayers consume such attention that the clouds are so thick a ray of sunshine that is “good news” cannot get through. As capitalists, we focus on investment. Specifically, we focus on return on investment. To that end, we wish to thank you for some of the good news we see from our home state of Georgia in regards to investments you have made and directed of our common assets.
First and foremost, the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project is among the biggest and most meaningful public infrastructure projects in the history of the state of Georgia. Your dogged work to see this project through, your willingness to work with others to make it happen and your leadership in seeing the state’s portion of the project fully funded have set the stage for Georgia to continue its dynamic growth as a port of call for the cargo ships of the world. This provides a decided advantage for Georgia business as well as a significant attraction for new investment in our state.
Your support for the removal of the sales tax on energy used in manufacturing is a major step in keeping Georgia competitive in the world economy. As you rightly recognized, energy used in manufacturing is an “input” into the final product. This change in tax policy helps keep Georgia products competitive and most certainly makes Georgia a more attractive state for future job creation in the manufacturing sector.
Georgia needs a skilled workforce. Your “Go Build Georgia” initiative demonstrates that you know this and are willing to do something about it. With an aging workforce and a dynamically changing workplace, we find ourselves in real need. Your program is designed to reach out to the business community to help shape the education delivered to our future workforce. We cannot thank you enough for your focus on this serious need.
Part of our commitment to workforce development is found in our Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). We have watched as you have made strategic investments in this system. We appreciate the professional leadership you have placed in this system. Our relationships with TCSG institutions are strong and improving every day.
Locally, we are appreciative of your investment in the planning money for the expansion of the Whitfield/Murray Campus of Georgia Northwestern Technical College. Now that the planning process is nearing completion, we strongly endorse that the necessary funding be approved to construct these needed facilities. This campus serves the greater community and the flooring industry quite well and we look forward to its continued growth.
Because business does not operate in a vacuum, we recognize that many of your initiatives which are not directly focused on business will result in a meaningful benefit to the business community. Among others, we note for special mention your criminal justice reform and your focus on accountability courts. As mentioned above, our need for skilled, trained and productive workers is high. A society fixated on an outdated and unsuccessful criminal justice model cannot produce such a workforce nor can business support the gigantic costs of such a system. Additionally, individuals and families trapped in the cycle of addiction and dependency do not result in productive citizens. Out of all your initiatives to date, we believe the return on this investment will likely be the greatest for our government, our businesses and the economy, and for society as a whole. We are proud to call Georgia home. Thank you for providing leadership that ensures we remain among the best places to do business. Now, let’s get back to work.

21st edition of Carpet & Art Oasis inaugurated

DUBAI: December 31, 2015
The Carpet and Art Oasis, one of the iconic segments of annual Dubai Shopping Festival for the last two decades, has been officially inaugurated in a ceremony on Wednesday.

The 21st edition of the Carpet & Art Oasis being held under the theme ‘Dubai City of Carpet’ was inaugurated by Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman of DP World and Chairman of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation and Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, Director of Dubai Customs.

The exhibition is being organised by Dubai Customs at the Dubai World Trade Centre, Zabeel Hall 2, and it will run till Jan.15, 2016. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Laila Mohammad Suhail, CEO of the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), and the organisers of DSF, along with some members of the diplomatic community in the UAE and other DSF officials.

The Carpet & Art Oasis is one of the largest and most anticipated carpet exhibitions in the world, proudly showcasing 250,000 high-end and trusted-quality handmade carpets at an estimated net market value of Dhs 2.5 billion. This event helped in boosting the retail industry and economic growth in Dubai.

Bin Sulayem said, “The Carpet and Art Oasis is an initiative Dubai Customs ardently looked after over the last two decades consecutively. The Oasis brings together a multinational crowd of people with a penchant for hand-made works of art. Hundreds of exhibitors from around the world are taking part in the bonanza this year.”

Laila Suhail stressed on the importance of Carpets & Art Oasis as a main event of Dubai Shopping Festival since its inception.“It has become a main destination for DSF’s multinational visitors and a great family attraction. The success of the event is a clear result of the solid cooperation between Dubai Government agencies to achieve the strategic targets laid by the Dubai Leadership”

“Our support to this unique event reflects our strong commitment to enhance the retail sector in Dubai across all its segments”, Suhail said.

Ahmed Mahboub Musabih, the Director of Dubai Customs, said that the Carpet & Art Oasis contributes to boosting the trade and economic movement in the carpet industry, as it features precious and rare carpets brought from the most famous carpet-producing countries in the world; China, India Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Kashmir and others.

“The Oasis has recorded a resounding success over its 21-year journey. Since its inauguration 21 years ago, the number of visitors flocking to the Carpet Oasis has reached over one million, with total sales of more than Dhs2 billion and nearly 2.5 million carpets have been exhibited thus far.

“The Oasis includes a museum that displays historical documents and holdings that tell the story of Dubai Customs from the beginning till now. The main entrance of the Oasis is a miniature model of Dubai Customs’ first building with a 3D panorama pictures of the late sheiks who used it as their official office to run the emirate,” said Musabih.

Abdul Rahman Issa, Chairman of the Carpet Oasis’ Steering Committee, said that the 21st edition of the Carpet & Art Oasis displays a huge number of precious carpets. Some of these carpets will be sold in public auctions on the sidelines of the Oasis. “With a 20 per cent increase in area, the exhibition is held over 6,000 square metres, and includes 54 pavilions spreading over 4,000 square metres. The remaining area is used to hold auctions on handmade rugs and conduct workshops for visitors to see how carpets are made and how knots are tied. There are daily raffle draws, in coordination with DSF, at the Oasis, offering visitors a chance to take home valuable prizes,” added Issa.

Abdulrahman Issa stated that Turkistan and Azerbaijan are taking part in the Oasis for the first time and are displaying their rugs in a 500-square metre pavilion. He expects to see deals worth millions of dirhams being sealed at the Oasis, as last year’s sales turnover went above Dhs120 million.

He noted that around 25 per cent of displayed items are antiques that are showcased for the first time. Some of these date back to over 400-500 years and are brought to the Oasis only as display items. “The price tag on some rugs runs as high as millions of dirhams,” Issa added.

The Carpet Oasis is open for visitors Saturdays to Thursdays from 10am to 10pm and Fridays from 4pm to 11pm.

Iran, China Ink MoU to Cooperate in Carpet Sector

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran National Carpet Center (INCC) and China Tibetan Carpet Association (CTCA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote cooperation in the carpet industry.

In a meeting attended by the heads of INCC and Carpet Museum of Iran and a number of CTCA members, the two sides inked the deal and emphasized on the necessity to boost cooperation based on cultural exchanges.
During the session, Hamid Kargar, the head of the INCC, highlighted the age-old history, breadth and reputation of hand-woven Persian carpets and said carpeting can be a good motivation for cultural interactions and a better understanding between the two peoples.
Iran has recently stepped up efforts to enhance its non-oil exports and reduce dependency on its oil revenues.
This comes against the backdrop of a wave of renewed interest in ties with Iran after the country and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14 reached a conclusion over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear program.
The comprehensive nuclear deal between Tehran and the six powers would terminate all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran after coming into force.
Experts believe that Iran’s economic growth would rise remarkably after the final nuclear deal takes effect.
