CARPET MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY |
Will the Minister of | TEXTILES | be pleased to state:- |
(a) the number of persons engaged in the carpet manufacturing industry in the country, State-wise;
(b) the problems and hardships being faced by this industry;
(c) whether employment opportunities are continuously declining in this sector;
(d) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;
(e) whether there is a huge potential of export in the carpet industry of the country; and
(f) if so, the steps proposed to be taken by the Government for promotion of the said industry? |

MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) IN THE MINISTRY OF TEXTILES (SHRI SANTOSH KUMAR GANGWAR)
(a): There are around 2 million persons engaged in the carpet manufacturing sector in the country. State-wise/UT-wise data is not finalised yet.
(b): The problems and hardships being faced by this sector include scarcity of appropriate raw material, lack of infrastructural facilities, lack of working capital, lack of knowledge about appropriate technology, lack of entrepreneurial skills among artisans and competition from machine made products.
(c): No.
(d): Not applicable.
(e): Yes. The export of Carpets has increased at the rate of 22.73% (in rupee term) during the period from April, 2014 to January, 2015.
(f): The Government is implementing the following seven schemes for promotion and development of handicrafts including Carpet Industry:-
(i) Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojana (AHVY)
(ii) Design and technology upgradation scheme
(iii) Marketing support and services scheme
(iv) Research and development scheme
(v) Human and resource development scheme
(vi) Handicrafts artisans comprehensive welfare scheme for Handicrafts Artisans and
(vii) Infrastructure and technology development scheme.
Further the Government is implementing two Mega Cluster Projects at Mirzapur Bhadohi & Srinagar for over all development of Carpet industry in these areas. |
